Monroe shock absorbers for the front of the Toyota Avalon (part numbers 72307 and 72308) are specially designed for the replacement market, addressing the natural wear that occurs in suspension and other components after extensive kilometers of driving.

These shock absorbers operate like oil pumps. A piston, connected to the end of the piston rod, moves within a pressure tube filled with hydraulic fluid. During suspension movement, hydraulic fluid is forced through small holes (orifices) in the piston, restricting its flow. This action slows the piston’s movement, thereby dampening the spring and suspension motions.

The resistance provided by shock absorbers depends on the speed of suspension movement and the size and number of orifices in the piston. Modern shock absorbers are velocity-sensitive hydraulic damping devices, adjusting resistance based on suspension speed. This adaptive feature allows them to respond to varying road conditions, reducing:

– Roll or sway
– Brake dive and acceleration squat

Shock absorbers function through fluid displacement during both compression and extension cycles. Typically, they offer more resistance during the extension cycle, which manages the movement of a vehicle’s heavier sprung weight compared to the compression cycle, which controls the lighter unsprung weight.
