Description

Monroe shock absorbers for the rear of the Toyota Camry (part numbers 72309 and 72310) are specially engineered for the replacement market, addressing the natural wear that occurs in suspension and other components after covering extensive kilometers.

These shock absorbers function similarly to oil pumps: a piston attached to the end of the piston rod moves within a pressure tube filled with hydraulic fluid. As the vehicle’s suspension travels up and down, the hydraulic fluid is pushed through small holes (orifices) inside the piston. These orifices control the flow of fluid, allowing only a small amount to pass through, which slows down the piston and consequently dampens the movement of the spring and suspension.

The resistance provided by shock absorbers depends on the speed of suspension movement and the size and number of orifices in the piston. They are velocity-sensitive hydraulic damping devices, meaning they adjust their resistance based on the speed at which the suspension moves. This adaptive feature enables shock absorbers to respond effectively to varying road conditions, thereby reducing:

– Bounce
– Roll or sway
– Brake dive and acceleration squat

Shock absorbers operate on the principle of fluid displacement during both the compression and extension cycles. Typically, they offer more resistance during the extension cycle, which controls the movement of the vehicle’s heavier sprung weight, compared to the compression cycle that manages the lighter unsprung weight. This dual-cycle operation enhances stability and comfort across different driving conditions.
